Ireland’s Classic Hits Radio is putting its national platform behind a major nationwide road safety initiative, joining 20 other independent radio stations in a year-long campaign focused on improving awareness among road users across Ireland.
Over the coming year, Ireland’s Classic Hits Radio will create and broadcast its own bespoke road safety content, using its presenters, producers and editors to bring practical information, expert insight and real-life experiences directly to its audience.
The initiative will see the 21 participating independent stations collectively broadcast more than 1,200 pieces of road safety content, including more than 100 documentary and discussion programmes and around 1,100 shorter feature episodes.
The campaign is an opportunity for Ireland’s Classic Hits Radio to use its national reach and established relationship with listeners to make road safety a key part of its programming.
The station will develop content specifically for its audience, covering issues affecting road users and looking at practical steps people can take to stay safer on Irish roads. Interviews, information and real-life stories will form part of the programming.
The wider initiative will also feature first-hand testimony from people who attend road collisions and support those affected, alongside information and analysis from An Garda Síochána, the Road Safety Authority and local authorities.
The campaign comes as road deaths in Ireland continue to be a serious concern. Latest Garda figures show that 133 people have died on Irish roads so far in 2026, compared with 120 during the same period last year.
Radio also provides a direct way of reaching people while they are travelling, with 41% of radio listening in Ireland taking place in vehicles.
Michael Kelly, Chief Executive of the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland, said the initiative demonstrates the role independent radio can play in delivering important public interest information to audiences across the country.
“This is a unique initiative which means that listeners all over Ireland will hear programming which will increase their awareness and knowledge of road safety and how to stay safer as a road user.”
“It is an example of stations playing their part in the urgent work of reducing deaths and serious injuries on the road, and it is possible because of the unity in our sector and the huge number of loyal listeners to our stations.”
Ireland’s Classic Hits Radio is one of 21 independent stations taking part, with each broadcaster developing its own content for its listeners and local communities.
The project is supported by the News Reporting Scheme, which helps fund public interest journalism through Coimisiún na Meán and the Exchequer.
For Ireland’s Classic Hits Radio, the initiative is another opportunity to put its national reach and trusted on-air platform behind an issue that affects every road user, while delivering useful information and real experiences to its audience throughout the coming year.
